Question by katie: whats the difference between a college degree in microbiology opposed to biochemistry?
what are the differences between the required classes, what is the difference of focus in each, and what are the differences as far as career opportunities
i know their similar and the differences are minor, but what are they

Best answer:

Answer by Emily M
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, etc.

Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of biological molecules, including the structure of such molecules, their function, and how they interact with one another.

The exact requirements will depend on the policies of the college you attend and whether you earn an A.B. or a B.S. Check the college’s web site for details. Here are some general thoughts, though.
For a microbiology major, you’d have to take courses on microorganisms, basic biology, molecular biology ( including biochemistry of nucleic acids), cell biology/physiology (overlaps with biochemistry), and microbial genetics. You might also take course on virology, fungi, protozoology, immunology, biotechnology and some biology or biotechnology lab courses.

For biochemistry, you would probably take courses on chemistry (organic, inorganic, general, physical, analytical), courses on basic biochemistry including metabolic pathways for biosynthesis and catabolism of biological molecules such as polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. You’d also take some biochemistry lab courses.

For both, you’d probably take basic biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and physics (making them popular pre-med majors).

What do you think? Answer below!

Best answer:

Answer by Thebesthelp
Pharmacy school is tough. Those grades definitely won’t get you in. Microbiology jobs are okay, even though they don’t pay that much. I would focus on trying to find a job first, and then, if not successful, try pharmacy school.

I am working to get pre-recs for PA school, and have taken these classes but they were >10 years ago. Where I can I find classes that are a) not waitlisted and b) online c) readily available and d) high quality? UC Berkeley extension has me waitlisted for both classes, and I would like to have started on the classes before I enroll. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by jrylee00
both classes are useless online. I don’t know which PA program you are applying to, but most will not accept online classes for any science credit. Take that from someone who found out the hard way. I’m in my first year at Texas Tech’s PA program in Midland, TX.

Explain what the term “parafocal” means when applied to a microscope.

Best answer:

Answer by Carlie Rose
A parfocal lens is a microscope or camera lens that stays approximately in focus when the magnification is changed. For example, if the focal point of a microscope is changed from a low power objective(10x) to a higher power (40x or 43x), the object stays in focus. Similarly, in professional cameras, the object remains in focus as the zoom changes. The most powerful lense, has the more focus, but over a small area.
