People not in the medical field often seem to get baffled when they think about two extremely similar diseases having the same symptoms. Well, I myself was a part of this confusion until sometime back when I learnt about these two disorders in a bit details after my aunt was diagnosed with Alzheimer. People not in the medical field often seem to get baffled when they think about two extremely similar diseases having the same symptoms. Well, if you still aren’t able to make out the difference between the two disorders, here is some details that I drew out from my personal case.

Dementia is actually no particular disease. It is simply a medical descriptive term that is used often to describe a collection of symptoms which are caused due to a number of neurological disorders that affect the brain. The major sign of dementia is the intellectual impairment such as memory loss or problems in thinking different things. People suffering from this symptom can also face issues in managing or understanding the normal relations or daily activities. A few of the other signs of Dementia include:

- A drastic loss in the ability to sort simple problems like finding phone number, or the keys of the house.

- Problems in maintaining one’s emotional control over general things.

- Sudden change in the personality and behavior.

- Hallucinations, agitation, uncontrollable rage, delusions, etc.

- And most importantly, a sudden memory loss which is simply unexplainable.

Don’t these symptoms sound familiar to you? Well, surely they would if you have some brief idea about Alzheimer’s disease. But, don’t confuse these symptoms with that of the Alzheimer’s disease as there is one major difference in the two.

Remember, I mentioned above that Dementia is a condition caused due to certain neurological diseases? Well yes, Dementia is mainly caused due to several diseases which also includes the Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the major cause of Dementia which is commonly known to affect people aged somewhere around 60 years and around. But, many a times, there have been rare cases where the disease is diagnosed in people in their mid 30s. Signs of Dementia can also be caused due to brain damages caused due to accidents, head injuries, tumors, strokes, etc.

Well, now that you know about the main difference between dementia and Alzheimers, it gets important that you also learn about its possible treatments. Although there isn’t any specific cure for the condition, but there certainly are some medications that help in reversing or at least halting the progression of this fatal disease. You can take the medications like Tacrine, Donepezil, Rivastigmine, Galantamine, etc. along with the proper care that your psychiatrist suggests you. Thus, you can also take possible steps to cure the disease from your own home. But, in highly complicated cases, you can also take the help of the several medical based Dementia care homes which offer residential and nursing care that helps the patients to recuperate faster.
